The Salt Market is celebration of handmade wares created by modern makers from the local region hosted in Syracuse, NY.
The adventure was launched in 2009 when Briana Kohlbrenner and Vanessa Rose transformed a dusty, old warehouse space into a vibrant, exciting, marketplace showcasing 30+ quirky vendors and gathering 800+ visitors. In 2010, they invited Stasya Erickson and Courtney Rile to the team to help build up what they’d started. The four friends became known as the “Salty Ladies.”
With their signature string lights and whimsical handmade decorations, the Salty Ladies transform underutilized spaces such as warehouses, storefronts and theaters into lively shopping environments. A different artist is hired to create new marketing materials for each event, including limited edition, screen-printed tote bags handed out to the first 50 visitors. Participating vendors also received a complimentary tote bag filled with snacks and beverages for their day.
The market “local” lasso has grown to include makers throughout the Upstate region (and even a little beyond) and the Salty Ladies continue to seek new and unique creatives that showcase fresh takes on current trends. Many of these vendors can only be found at the Salt Market, making this event a must-visit.
Local food and dessert vendors are also featured, to give shoppers a chance to recharge and sample some of Syracuse’s tastiest flavors. Live music adds the final touch, creating a warm and lively environment for vendors and visitors alike.
The Salty Ladies have hosted other events as well, including a two day show in the spring that featured beer and wine and a playfully named Pepper Market that focused on ‘30 makers selling their wares for $30 and under’.
Since 2015, the Salty Ladies have taken a pause on hosting markets to focus on their bustling careers and growing families. They hope to revive the markets in the coming years (fingers crossed for 2018/2019!).
